HealthSmart Evaluation Study News – Spring/Summer 2007

We have had a very productive year! We recently completed our follow-up spring data collection with over 1,200 students from 22 participating schools in
New York and California. We want to thank the district administrators, school principals, site coordinators, 4th grade teachers, and their students for assisting with and participating in all study-related activities.

As you may recall, a goal of the HealthSmart Evaluation study is to determine the relative impact of HealthSmart on students by comparing outcomes of students who have had the curriculum with those who have not. In order to do this comparison, some schools are receiving the curriculum for implementation sooner than others. Teachers who implemented the 4th grade curriculum this academic year report they have enjoyed teaching the curriculum and their students’ seem to have liked learning about developing and practicing healthy behaviors.

Here are some of the comments teachers have shared with us about students’ experiences with HealthSmart:
  • “My students love HealthSmart!”
  • “The students are very excited about the HealthSmart curriculum, especially since it relates to their daily experiences in a variety of ways.”
  • “Students are engaged and animated. The activities are motivating and they really seem to be enjoying them!”
  • “At the end of the activity, the students seemed to be wanting more.”

Preparations for the implementation of the Grade 5 curriculum and for spring data collection in the 2007-08 academic year are already underway. We invite you to visit the website often as we are updating this site regularly. If you would like any additional information about study-related activities or have any questions about the study in general, please feel free to e-mail or call us by clicking on the link “Contact Us” at the top of the page.

Have a happy and relaxing summer!
